Quick answer: when is the best time to visit Turkey?
For most travelers, the sweet spot is late April to early June, or mid-September to late October. You get warm but not scorching weather, hot air balloons flying almost daily in Cappadocia, swimmable seas on the south coast, and crowds that are still manageable.
Avoid mid-July to mid-August unless you specifically want a beach holiday - inland Cappadocia and Ephesus regularly hit 38C, and Istanbul becomes muggy. November to March is genuinely cold in central Turkey, but Istanbul stays atmospheric and prices drop 40-50%.
Spring (March-May): the best overall window
March still has snow on the Cappadocian valleys some mornings and rain in Istanbul, but by mid-April the country is in full bloom. Tulip season covers the parks of Istanbul, the Aegean coast hits 22-25C, and balloon flights run nearly every morning in Cappadocia.
May is arguably the single best month to visit Turkey - long daylight, warm but not hot, sea swimming starts on the south coast, and the historical sites are not yet packed. Hotels in Cappadocia and the Lycian coast can sell out 60+ days ahead, so book early.
Summer (June-August): hot, busy and beach-perfect
June is glorious on the Mediterranean and still tolerable inland. By July, Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye and Marmaris become full Mediterranean summer - 32-35C, packed beaches, blue cruises running, kids out of school across Europe.
August is the peak of peak: prices rise 30-50%, all hotels are full, and Cappadocia can get uncomfortably hot. Istanbul empties as locals flee to the coast - ironically a quieter time to visit the Old City if you can stand the humidity.
Autumn (September-November): the smart traveler pick
September is the second sweet spot after May. The Aegean and Mediterranean stay swim-warm, balloon mornings are reliable in Cappadocia, and tour operators run their best small-group departures.
October offers golden light across the Ephesus columns, mild Istanbul, and harvest festivals in Sirince. By November, the south coast cools but Istanbul becomes moody and beautiful - a great time for museum-focused city breaks.
Winter (December-February): bargain prices and snowy domes
December and January in Istanbul are atmospheric - the Old City under occasional snow is unforgettable, hotel rates drop sharply, and queues at Hagia Sophia disappear. Cappadocia under snow is one of the most magical sights in the world; balloons fly on clear days and cave-hotel rates are 40-50% off.
Avoid the high-altitude pass roads after heavy snow, and expect the Mediterranean coast to be too cool for swimming. New Years Eve in Istanbul is a special experience but books up by October.
Region by region: when to go
Istanbul: April-June and September-November. Avoid August humidity.
Cappadocia: April-June and September-October for balloons + warm hikes. Winter is magical if you can handle -5C mornings.
Ephesus & Pamukkale: April-May and October. Midsummer is brutal at the open-air sites.
Antalya, Fethiye & Bodrum: May-June and September are perfect. July-August is busy but swimmable. Winter is for hikers, not swimmers.
Eastern Turkey (Mount Nemrut, Lake Van): May-June and September only. Snow closes the passes most of winter.
